The members of the association represent grassroots residents and businesses from Essex County and adjacent communities in Caledonia (Burke, Kirby, and Newark)and Orleans (Charleston, Holland, Morgan and Westmore) Counties in Vermont and Coos County(Colebrook, North Stratford, Pittsburgh, Northumberland, and Stewartstown) in New Hampshire.
In the midst of widespread changes to the landscape, communities and economy of the Northeast Kingdom, a group of diverse local citizens came together to envision and shape the future of their region. Through the Gateway Association they strive to coordinate community and economic development that will support the region's environmental stewardship and unique traditional character through education and advocacy activities.
Based on community discussions at a Kingdom Community Forum In February 2002, four Association groups are actively working on the following projects in partnership with others:
- Heritage Trails Committee

The Recreation group completed a Recreational Opportunities Inventory for the greater Nulhegan region including the outdoor, non-motorized recreation listings and amenities displayed in this web site.
