Boating and Fishing
Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Lt. Kenneth Denton, St Johnsbury 1-802-748-3111
Nuisance Aquatic Species

Eurasian watermilfoil, water chestnut, zebra mussels, alewives and other exotic species threaten Vermont's waters and impact the fisheries they support. Theses nuisance aquatic species are currently found in several lakes and ponds and can be inadvertently introduced into other waters, where they disrupt the entire ecosystem. To help stop the spread of nuisance species remember to inspect your equipment for foreign object, plant or animal, drain all water and discard all baits away from the water, rinse your boat, let it dry for five days in the sun, recognize nuisance aquatic species and report them to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Service. Pictured above are water milfoil and a zebra mussel.
Bank erosion
Each year, hundreds of riverfront landowners lose their land downstream. Careless boaters speeding through narrow sections allow their wakes to hit the shore and erode the banks. This costs landowners money, and pollutes the river with sediment, to say nothing of breaking the law. Priceless archeological treasures along the river are also threatened by boat wakes. To avoid erosion, please respect the following guidelines:
. Keep your wake down within 150' of shore; obey the speed limit . Steer clear of exposed, steep, or slumping banks . Do not disturb plants growing on riverbanks -they help hold the bank in place . Do not climb on exposed or steep banks . Launch your boat or canoe at a stable access
Lead Poisoning Over the past years, more than one-half of the loons found dead in Vermont died of lead poisoning. Anglers can help loons and other wildlife by switching to nontoxic sinkers.

Hunting Season
Please be aware of hunting seasons, especially deer rifle season in late November. It is recommended that you and your dog wear blaze orange if you are going to be in the woods. Hunting is alowed on all the land unless it is posted.
Trail Use
Please stay off the trails during mud season, until the end of May, to prevent channeling water, loosening soil, and trampling vegetation and soil adjacent to trail surface.
